This is sad. I come from a country that was behind an iron curtain. A few kilometers from where I lived were border stations shooting at people who tried to swim across the river to a more free society.
The sad thing is that the difference between Chinese control and implementation in the west is usually just a few years. China is a testnet for western dystopias.
